DAY 24

Chicago. LOVE this town. We met up with @dansinker in Evanston in the morning, prior to his dentist appointment (thanks for fitting us in – hope your teeth are well). Dan is a bit of a Twitter celebrity. In 2010 to 2011, he secretly penned the parody account of Rahm Emanuel, @MayorEmanuel, during his bid for Mayor of Chicago. From his first tweet (f*** you right in your f***ing face-hole), it was clear that Dan’s story would be irreverent, immediate, and irresistible. With a cast of characters that included David Axelrod, Carl the intern, and a duck named Quaxelrod, it is still, IMHO, the...

DAY 13

On the drive from North Carolina to Arlington, Virginia, the outside temperature was 114 degrees. Inside Maeby the Audi, we did our best to keep it in the 60’s. Cause that’s just how we roll. We hit some bad holiday traffic heading into the DC area, which made us late (later than normal) for our interview with Bethanne Patrick, @justbethanne.   Bethanne Patrick will always be one of my favorites because she introduced the world to the hashtag #fridayreads. (I was introduced to #fridayreads by following @joe_hill. Big #ff to him if you like books, sci-fi, zombies, humor or...

DAY 12

I think we’re hitting our stride, you guys. When Matt comes back, we’re going to have this down to a science. It helps that Hassan, our engineer, doesn’t let us help pack the car anymore. (He has a system and we would just mess it up.) We left Greenville and headed north. In Charlotte, we stopped at a local park to meet up with McKinsey (@McKinseyHarris) from News 14 and Sam Spencer (@choosesam), President of Young Democrats of North Carolina. We talked about the Democratic National Convention, and Sam’s first campaign at the age of 20. We also talked to him about which conservatives...

DAY 11

Atlanta to Greenville, SC is a short drive, so we stopped for breakfast in Jefferson at my friend Leah’s house. Leah made an incredible breakfast (thank you!), and we got to spend some time talking politics and biscuits and children. Leah has four children. FOUR. She is essentially a superhero. Robert drew us pictures and latched himself on to Hassan. Richard avoided us, but occasionally shot us a suspicious look. Elizabeth ignored us. And Susan threw a chicken at Evans. It was the most fun breakfast ever. When we got to Greenville, we went straight to Relentless Tattoo to meet up with Rex...

DAY 10

According to @abba_ks, most people from Atlanta hate it when people call it Hotlanta. But even she had to agree.  It was really really hot. We dropped Matt off at the airport first thing. He had to fly back to LA to be the Best Man in a wedding. (Please come back soon, we are really slow at setting up the equipment on our own. Also, a refrigerated truck was idling near us during the whole interview so the sound might be kind of meh, but the good news is that he was towed right as we were leaving. That doesn’t help with the sound, but it made me feel better.) Hassan was still flying...

DAY 8

We spent the morning in New Orleans, talking to Rob (@robprather) and Laura (@laurabergerol) about everything from voodoo to transvaginal ultrasounds (don’t ask). I’d like to apologize to them for being a little bit out of it – the heat in Louisiana just about killed us. You think I’m joking. I don’t even understand how people go about their daily lives in this weather. It’s an issue. Speaking of issues, Hassan recommended I give you a little behind the scenes info about the process of making an independent documentary. Mostly I can only tell you about the process of making...
